Building Envelope Engineering and Ventilated Facades in Rome and Lazio

The construction of a ventilated façade within the urban and architectural fabric of Rome and the Lazio region requires an engineering approach tailored to the specific climate, regulations, and history of the area.

VM Group, with thirty years of experience in the design and installation of advanced cladding systems, is the ideal technical partner for architectural firms, general contractors, and public or private clients seeking to combine significant energy efficiency with the utmost aesthetic precision.

The structural and climatic challenges of the Roman context

Designing an insulating cladding in Rome means not only protecting a building from the winter cold, but also scientifically managing the effects of summer solar radiation.

  • Optimizing summer comfort (Night Purging): In Mediterranean climates, summer temperatures severely test a building's thermal inertia. Our ventilated facades actively exploit the chimney effect: the air cavity removes the radiant heat accumulated by the external cladding before it reaches the masonry, drastically reducing indoor cooling costs.

  • Managing historical and landscape constraints: Operating in Rome means constantly respecting architectural decorum and the opinions of the Superintendency. Our concealed fixing systems and selection of quality materials (stoneware, natural stone, terracotta) allow us to integrate cutting-edge technologies even in urban regeneration contexts or in protected areas, respecting the capital's historic colors and materials.

Major Works and Reference Projects in Rome

Our presence in the Roman area is demonstrated by our work on buildings of the highest international importance, where the design complexity required the highest certification standards (VM Group is an ESCo company certified UNI CEI 11352 and ISO 9001).

Ventilated Facades and Technical Cladding: The New FAO Multi-Storey Car Park in Rome
A perfect combination of structural safety and contemporary design, created with cutting-edge gluing systems and custom perforated metals.

VM Group designed the envelope for the new multi-storey car park at the FAO headquarters in Rome.
The project stands out for its use of Laminam panels in the 500x1000 mm format, 5+ thick, reinforced with mesh.
The technical challenge of installation was overcome thanks to the use of high-performance bonding systems from Mapei, which guarantee maximum adhesion and structural safety over time. The work was completed with RAL 8000 perforated sheet metal cladding (1.5 mm thick) for natural ventilation. This project embodies 30 years of experience and synergy with the best technological partners in the sector.

Terracotta Engineering at the Service of the European Space Agency

At ESA's ESRIN center in Frascati, VM Group created a terracotta ventilated façade that perfectly embodies the agency's values of innovation and sustainability. In a context where scientific research requires controlled, high-performance environments, our envelope guarantees superior standards of thermal insulation and durability.
The project required pinpoint precision in installation to clad complex technological spaces, using cutting-edge dry anchoring systems.
This project is not only a tribute to Italy's material tradition, but also an advanced engineering solution that protects ESA's critical infrastructure, demonstrating VM Group's ability to meet the most stringent international technical specifications.

Basilica of St. Paul (Rome) – Monumental Prestige
The Eternity of Travertine Meets Modern Engineering: 1,000 Square Meters of Excellence

Basilica of St. Paul (Rome) – Monumental Prestige
The Eternity of Travertine Meets Modern Engineering: 1,000 Square Meters of Excellence

In one of the world's most iconic locations, VM Group created the ventilated façade for a building belonging to the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. The project covered a 1,000-square-meter surface area, enhanced by the use of Roman Travertine, the stone that has defined Rome's architectural identity for millennia.
The technical challenge was to integrate the solemnity of the stone material with the performance of a cutting-edge ventilated envelope. Thanks to our high-strength anchoring systems, we ensured perfect coplanarity of the slabs and optimal ventilation, ensuring maximum durability of the structure. This project represents the perfect synthesis of VM Group's DNA: respect for tradition, mastery of natural materials, and application of the most advanced construction technologies.

The project documents the creation of a complex architectural envelope that combines the tradition of Impruneta terracotta with the performance of a ventilated façade. Thanks to the integration of brise-soleil systems, the building achieves active solar control, reducing summer heat loads and ensuring the thermal comfort required by ESCo standards.
Technical Features:

  • Digital Survey: Substructure design based on laser scanning to ensure perfect, accurate alignment of the brise-soleils.

  • Performance: Optimization of thermal lag thanks to the natural properties of the fine brick.

  • Construction Site Efficiency: Rapid anchoring systems to optimize installation times on large commercial surfaces.

Residenza Roma – Composite Aluminum and Technical Design

Metropolitan Geometries: The Rigour of the Visible Hook

In this residential project in Rome, VM Group opted for composite aluminum installed with a visible mechanical hook fastening system, a solution that combines structural strength with striking technical aesthetics.

The choice of composite allows for perfectly flat surfaces that are resistant to the stresses of the urban environment, while the visibility of the fastening elements becomes an architectural detail that highlights the construction technology of the work.

The system ensures constant ventilation of the cavity, eliminating problems of summer overheating and humidity, confirming the effectiveness of metal as the material of choice for the regeneration of contemporary living spaces.

McDonald's Rome – High-Traffic Design and Durability
The Warmth of Wood, the Strength of Laminate: HPL for Retail

For the McDonald's store in Rome, VM Group created HPL cladding with a wood-effect finish, using a concealed fastening system. The goal was twofold: to convey the warm, familiar atmosphere typical of the brand's new concepts and to ensure a surface that stands up to intensive use and the elements.
High-pressure laminate (HPL) is the ideal solution for the retail sector: it resists impacts and scratches and does not require the constant maintenance of real wood. Thanks to our thirty years of experience, we have taken care of every detail—from the sunshade slats to the façade panels—ensuring perfect flatness and aesthetic continuity that elevates the store's design, making it an example of structural efficiency and visual appeal.
