VM Group: 30 Years of Experience in Ventilated Facades

Tribunale di Rimini: Facciata ventilata in travertino Navona

From the first installations to the technological challenges of 2026: how we transformed the concept of ventilated facades in Italy.

Thirty years ago, the Italian construction industry was very different. Energy efficiency was still rarely discussed, and the concept of “ventilated facades” was reserved for a few cutting-edge projects. At VM Group, we started right then and there, driven by the belief that the building envelope should not be a static element, but a dynamic system capable of allowing buildings to “breathe.”

Today, looking back on our journey, we see more than just square meters of stoneware, stone, or metal installed. We see the evolution of a technique that has now become the gold standard for sustainable design.

What has changed in three decades? Moving from twenty years of experience to thirty years means having witnessed the evolution of materials:

  • The precision of our systems: We have moved on from the first mechanical anchors to concealed fixing systems and engineered substructures that allow for millimetric tolerances.

  • The revolution in materials: We have seen porcelain stoneware transform from a simple tile to a large-format “technological skin” capable of managing the solar reflectance index (SRI) for maximum energy savings.

  • The complexity of construction sites: From small renovations to large national projects (such as the ESA headquarters or projects in Rome and Milan), our technical management skills have been refined to meet increasingly stringent regulations.

Why experience matters (now more than ever) In an era where new companies are constantly emerging, our history is your guarantee. A building envelope must last for decades: knowing how a material reacts after more than 30 years of exposure to the elements is not something you can learn from books, but only by working on construction sites since 1992.

Towards the future As we celebrate this milestone, we are already looking ahead to our next projects. The challenge for 2026 is 3D modularity, the integration of photovoltaic systems into facades, and the complete digitization of installation.

Thank you to all the architects, designers, and clients who have chosen to entrust VM Group with the aesthetics and efficiency of their projects over the past 30 years.
