In the contemporary architectural landscape, the primary challenge for large commercial complexes is no longer just visual impact, but operational sustainability. A building must communicate a strong identity while ensuring energy performance that drastically reduces operating costs.

In our latest project in Rome, VM Group responded to this challenge by combining a noble material like Cotto Imprunetino with the most advanced ventilated façade technologies.

Terracotta as a Technological System

Choosing terracotta for a ventilated façade today isn't just an aesthetic quirk. It's an engineering choice. Thanks to its high thermal inertia, terracotta acts as a building's lung: it absorbs heat and releases it gradually, stabilizing the internal temperature.

In this project, we took this function further by integrating brise-soleil (sunshades). These elements aren't just decorations, but actual active solar screens that:

  • Reduce direct radiation on the glass surfaces.

  • Reduce summer heat load by up to 30%.

  • Ensure optimal natural light diffusion for retail spaces.

VM Group Engineering: From Laser Scanner to Construction Site

The volumetric complexity of this shopping center required a meticulous approach. With over 30 years of experience in the field, we know that the beauty of a terracotta façade depends on perfect alignment.

For this reason, the entire substructure was designed starting from a laser scanner survey. This allowed us to:

  1. Map every angle and out-of-plumb of the raw structure.

  2. Pre-engineer the invisible anchoring systems.

  3. Reduce installation times, eliminating any unexpected issues during assembly.

A Vision from an ESCo (Energy Service Company)

As an ESCo-certified company, our mission is to transform every square meter of facade into a financial investment for our clients. Every properly installed terracotta slab contributes to achieving energy efficiency goals, improving the property's rating and market value.

The final result in Rome is an architectural envelope that breathes, protects, and lasts, confirming that the Italian brick tradition remains the most modern answer to the challenges of sustainable construction.
